HISTORY

Uganda, which is in East Africa, has a population of about 20 million, 85% of whom live in rural areas. 60% of the population are Christians, with a slight majority of Catholics compared to Protestants, 30% follow animist cults and 10% are Muslims. The majority of Ugandans descend from the integration of various African ethnic groups, especially Baganda, Banyoro and Batolo, and to a lesser extent Bushmen, Nilo-Hamitic, Sudanese and Bantu. There are also European and Indian minorities. The capital, Kampala, is also the most populated city. The majority of the population is of Bantu origin and live in the south of the country: the largest ethnic group is that of the Ganda, followed by the Soga, the Nkole, the Kiga, the Gisu, the Nyoro and the Toro. The official language is English but the languages most commonly spoken are Swahili and Luganda. Grandiose forts which bear witness to the presence of urban civilizations since the 10th century AD can be admired in different archaeological sites. The territory mainly consists of plateaux which generally slope down towards the north-west, where the Nile forms Lake Albert, one of the largest reserves of freshwater fish in the world. The country gained independence on 9th October 1962, led by the coalition government under President Milton Obote. After the parenthesis of the regime of Idi Amin (1971-1979) and the subsequent governments of transition, returned to the leadership of the country in 1981 and remained until 1985 in a climate of corruption and patronage. After the brief parenthesis under the presidency of Ocello, power is now firmly in the hands of President Museveni.
