HISTORY Tunisia, which is the most northern African state, became independent in 1957. After the Second World War, the pro-independence party Neo Destur gained widespread support and there were a number of anti-colonialist episodes which led to an armed struggle between 1952 and 1955. On 25th July 1957 the ruler was dethroned by a Constituent Assembly controlled by the Destur party and the Republic was proclaimed. Until 1981 the only legal political party in Tunisia was the Neo Destur, renamed Destur Socialist Party, under the guidance of Habib Bourguiba, appointed President for life. It was not until 1987 that General Zin El Abdin Ben Ali was made Prime Minister and in 1989 presidential and legislative elections were held but the parties of the opposition were in the minority. President Ben Ali was re-elected with a majority of 99%. Tunisia has about ten million inhabitants, the majority of whom, about 98%, are Arabs, with a Berber minority. The most widespread religion is Sunni Islam, representing 99.4% of the population, with tiny Jewish and Christian minorities. |
