HISTORY Senegal is today the only African country to have implemented a real democratization, with a multi-party political system of the Western type achieved through a democratic process. Senegal declared its independence on 4th April 1960 and on 5th September of the same year, the republic was proclaimed. Léopold Senghor (poet and father of the country) was elected president and in subsequent elections was reconfirmed for two decades until, on 1st Janaury 1981, he was replaced by the then Prime Minister Abdou Diouf. The capital, Dakar, is one of the most "Western" cities in the whole of Africa: a large port, an international airport, major banks and commercial networks make the city and Senegal Western Africa's gate to the West. The population is made up of various groups, including the Wolof (over 42%), the Serer (14.9%), the Peul (Fulani) (14.4%), the Toucouler (9.3%), the Diola (5.3%), and the Mandingo (3.6%). About 3% come from non-African countries, mainly France, Lebanon and Syria. The majority of the population are Sunni Muslims (94%) whilst 5% of the population are Christians and followers of traditional religions. |
