HISTORY

Madagascar, which is one of the largest islands in the world, is separated from the African continent by the Mozambique Channel. Its population of over 17 million, lives mainly on the central plateau, whilst rice and products for export are grown along the coasts. It is one of the poorest countries in the world and its main activities are linked to agriculture, which occupies three-quarters of the work force. 98% of the population are Malagasy, the rest of the population is made up of tiny minorities of Indians, Pakistanis, French and Chinese. 50% of the population are Christian, equally divided between Catholics and Protestants, the other half practise traditional religions and a minority of about 2% are Muslims. Madagascar, which is considered a large and very important biological reserve (there are very many species of fauna and flora that are unique in the world, selected by an isolated evolutionary process and therefore absolutely original) today has to live and cope with the serious problem of wild deforestation which has destroyed almost 75% of its forestry assets and that risks provoking the complete extinction of many plant and animal species; some types of crops that are still widespread in the island have contributed and continue to contribute to this risk. The country obtained independence from France in 1960.
