HISTORY Egypt lies in the north-eastern part of Africa, with a small extension (the Sinai) in Asian territory. It has a population of about 68 million and the great majority of its inhabitants are of African Mediterranean origin (eastern Hamitic). An important "ethnic" group, although small in number, is made up of "pure" Arabs. Arab farmers or Bedouin can be found in the deserts east and west of Bahr an Nil, where they lead nomadic lives. The official language is Arabic, spoken by the great majority of the population, although in the western oases there exist small groups that speak a Berber language. The majority of Egyptians are Sunni Muslims, but the largest settlement of Christians in the Middle East lives in Egypt. The Copts and members of other Christian churches account for 10% of the population. The political circumstances of Egypt have been strongly influenced by Islamic fundamentalism which has exercised very strong pressure on the government of the President, Mubarak, who succeeded Sadat, assassinated in 1981, after the Camp David agreements (1978) and the signature of the peace treaty with Israel (1979). The signature of this treaty, as well as the assassination of President Sadat, caused the severing of political relations with the Arab League and Egypt did not become a member again until 1989. Since 1991 the fundamentalist movements have intensified their actions and at the beginning of 1998 the number of victims of political attacks and assassinations was estimated at 1251. |
