TRUNCATED-CONICAL DRUM
Tanzania
Membranophone

A two-skin drum, of medium size, with a truncated conical shape and slightly tapering towards the base. The two skins, of different sizes, have a series of cuts on the edges where numerous parallel braces are tied which practically cover the whole wooden soundbox. On the side a fabric loop can be seen, tied to the braces, for transport. In Tanzania, when a chief dies, the most important phases of the funeral ceremony are marked by music. The announcement of the funeral to the population is given by a particular rhythm of the drums. When the chief's body is taken to the last ceremony, the sound of another drum accompanies burial. For those listening, those drum beats tell them that a chief has died. Other rhythms accompany the investiture of a new chief and his establishment as head of the village.
