"FLAT" DRUM
Somalia
Membranophone

We are in the presence of a particularly shaped drum which is almost flat, starting from a truncated conical section. Very common in Somalia, it has two perfectly round membranes welded to the low case of wood by a series of leather braces made from a single strip which runs all round the circumference of the membrane. The drum is beaten, on the side of the wider membrane, holding it between the knees, in a squatting position. A particularity is represented by the covering in fabric (cotton) between the skins and the wooden case. On one side the instrument has a leather ring to carry it.
