"TALKING" DRUM
Found in Botswana (but of uncertain origin)
Membranophone

We are in the presence of a classic hour-glass shaped drum with two skins, and with a variable intonation. These can be found in various sizes. The drum often has a row of small bells, preferably made of brass, along the edges of the two membranes. In this case the bells are applied to two wide ornamental bands of red leather. Another lateral band of leather helps support the instrument. The structure of this kind of drum always has an hour-glass shaped case, formed of two truncated cones of the same size, on a cylinder. A dense series of braces joins the two membranes and, under pressure, modifies the intonation. This drum comes from Botswana and very much resembles the more well known YORUBA drums of the DUN DUN orchestra of Nigeria, to the extent of making its origin dubious.
