LIKUTI DRUM
Mozambico
Membranophone

This is an goblet-shaped drum, with the membrane in skaeskin. It comes from the Aldeia 24 de Julio, in the region of PEMBA (Capo Delgado). The narrower cylindrical part has fixed to it a plant fibre strap plaited to form a chain which the drummers use to hold the instrument. The LIKUTI drum marks the beginning of a dance - the MAPICO - accompanied by five different types of drum. It is initially beaten with two sticks and then with the hands. According to use, it can be used in a standing position, raised or held at the level of the musician's chest.
