This type of drum is normally used only for funeral ceremonies.
The instrument is made of wood and is cylindrical in shape. The membrane consists of a skin fixed to the soundbox on one side only by wooden nails. In the centre there is a hole through which a flexible stick (preferably cane) is slid. The sliding of the stick produces the characteristic sound, like blowing or sighing, of friction drums. The case of the instrument is often decorated and engraved.
