Also known as DURBAKKE, DARBUKA or DERBUKA this is a clay drum, with a single skin, in the shape of a chalice. It is played by holding it tightly under one arm, if the musician is standing, or placed on the upper leg when the musician is seated. Some DARABUKKAD are made today with a metal or brass case and with screws for the tension of the skin, but the commonest DARABUKKA is definitely made of clay. The skin should preferably be that of fish, but goatskin or sheepskin are also used. The DARABUKKA belongs to the tradition both of popular and classical Arabic music; it is therefore a very common instrument used at celebrations by both men and women.
