These percussion instruments, belonging to the idiophone category, come from Zimbabwe and are part of the instruments used by the SHONA.
tribes. They are made from a certain number of empty MATAMBA and MAPUDZI fruit husks, dried in the sun. The husks are filled with seeds (HOTA) and arranged in parallel rows of six-eight pieces, held together by fibres of rind (MUPFUTI). Tied to the hips and knees of dancers, they accompany the rhythm of special group dances. A very similar instrument is also found in Mozambique, under the name of MASSEVE.
