We are in the presence of some of the thousand possible variations of instruments to be shaken. Often completely of causal origin, these variations in shape, although in their evident simplicity, are of great importance from the musical point of view and not infrequently are the result of genuine sonorous intuitions. The two CLUBS (type of MARACAS) from Zaire, for example, are made from fine strips of fibre; the long vertical ones are tightened around a piece of wood to form the grip; the horizontal and lighter ones form the actual soundbox, ovoid in shape. There are also blue and yellow ornaments and, on the neck, a short piece of cord with beads. The most significant characteristic however is in the clubs: seeds, coins and metal bottle tops characterize the special sonority, in this case sharp and bright, very similar to the sound of bells.
