The instrument reproduced in the image is an anklet for dancing. In this case, the instrument, made of plant fibre or raffia, is woven and curved in order to form a sort of 'U' shape. A piece of wire, placed between the two cups at the end, make it fit closer to the dancer's ankle. Shaken in the dance, the seeds in the cups at the end, provide a rhythmic accompaniment which can be further marked by beating the feet on the ground. In general, the instruments of this type are associated with dance and represent a sort of phase of passage between the body, itself used to produce sounds, and actual musical instruments.
