RATTLES
Mozambique
Idiophone

These rhythmic objects, perfectly cylindrical in shape, obtained from a short segment of hollow wood, come from the province of Pemba. Externally, they have a close-net series of (vertical) grooves and simple (horizontal) decorations. The cylinders are filled with seeds, small stones or other sonorous material. They are shaken to rhythmically accompany dances. It can be noticed, precisely by taking the example of very simple instruments such as this, how the shape, the sonorous characteristics and obviously the materials the musical instruments are made from are the direct consequence of a relationship with the resources of the environment and the territory where the various ethnic groups live. The fact that certain nomadic groups do not know the use of the drum, because it is too heavy to carry, derives from their dependence on environmental factors. Perhaps for this reason too, the musical instruments of the idiophone category are by far the most common, because they are the simplest and easiest to make and carry. .
