"Zulu" Belt (Bell collar)
South Africa
Idiophone

Once again this is a "sonorous ornament" rather than a real musical instrument, in this case used by ZULU, dancers, one of the most important ethnic groups in black Africa. A long series of small plant pouches are tied in a chain individually or in pairs (as in the image) to form a belt that is wrapped round the dancer's body. The pouches contain pebbles or seeds. As there are no metal or wooden parts, the sound that is produced by the belt (by shaking) is fairly dull and weak. Bell collars or belts (made of iron, bronze and wood as well as from plants) are very common, in particular in Southern Africa.
