These are "raft" rattles, called CHIQUITSI by the SHANGANE population of Mozambique, where they originate. They are containers consisting of a series of small straw canes from a plant called TXLHONGUE, woven together like a mat. This is then tightened by three raffia frames in order to form a box, with small seeds or pebbles being placed inside. The CHIQUITSI is played by shaking it with both hands or tilting it (with in this case the characteristic "undertow effect" - of varying length - depending on the greater or lesser inclination of the instrument).
It is mainly a female instrument, used to accompany the singing at marriage ceremonies. It is very common in the region of the south of Mozambique (Maputo, Gazae, Inhambane). In the northern regions it takes the name of KAEMBE
