BELL
Uganda
Idiophone

A bell obtained from the shell of a tortoise with a wooden clapper tied inside by a leather strap. This very particular bell probably comes from the shores of Lake Victoria. Originally, like other small percussion instruments of an unusual shape and material, it must have been used by a witch doctor. There is evidence, much of it authoritative, on the possible connection between sound, music and illness in almost all the oldest cultures and religions. In Africa there is hardly any illness that does not have a cure using chants or musical instruments. Over the years, numerous examples of the association of music, therapy and dancing have been collected.
