This is an instrument
which can be found, in an identical version, in various parts of eastern
Africa and in Uganda in particular. Used by dancers to mark rhythm, depending
on its length, it can be an anklet or a belt. It is made up of a series
of bells each consisting of a metal (iron) plate folded to form two concave
valves containing a small iron ball. The balls are attached to a long
strip of leather. In the photo we can see a bell collar used as an anklet
from BAGANDA
community. But an absolutely identical instrument is also common, by way
of example, amongst the KARIMOJONG
who live - again in Uganda - near the border with Kenya. In this case the bell collar takes the name of NGITWOROI.
