LUTE
Marocco
Chordophone

A medium-sized lute, of the long neck type, of Arabic-Berber origin. The principal feature of this instrument is the soundbox which is a small tortoise shell over which a membrane of hide has been stretched. The membrane is directly shaped on to the tortoise shell and stretched, finished off by sewing which ensures it will not change shape once tightened around the soundbox and fixed to the base of the neck. The neck, made of wood, is inlaid and has three pegs with the same number of nylon strings which can be tuned by tension. A small movable M-shaped wooden bridge is present on the membrane with notches for the strings.
