HARP
Uganda
Chordophone

We are in the presence of yet another variation on the theme of the harp, or rather of the ADUNGU, of Ugandan origin. This instrument, flat and vaguely ovoid in shape, presents - on its long slightly curved neck - five wooden pegs which regulate the tension of the same number of strings. The soundbox is covered with zebra skin, sewn on to the instrument with a simple but refined leather stitching. The ADUNGU is played in various ways, most often seated, holding it on the knees, or standing, holding it at the level of the chest. The strings are plucked preferably by alternating the thumb and the index finger in a sort of arpeggio. In many cases, the tonal characteristics of the instrument are completely different, depending on the dimensions and materials used. The musician chooses the instrument preferably on the basis of the intonation of his voice or on tonalities compatible with it.
