This is a very particular instrument, made exactly according to the traditional model used by the LANGO
populations in Uganda. The one in the photograph has a small soundbox made from a tortoise shell.
The soundbox is completely covered with hide. The strings (clearly not the original ones) are made of nylon and, despite appearances (the strings are fairly thick and hand-crafted), they allow the instrument to be perfectly tuned. This instrument has a rather sharp tonality, similar to that of a guitar (by way of example); other versions of the ADUNGU, larger in size, are close to the double bass in their tonality.
